This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 5.In the latest episode of The Mandalorian, viewers were treated to the brief appearance of a GNK power droid, popularly referred to as a "gonk" droid, with a more modern appearance that may give better insight into their actual purpose. The seemingly useless, slow moving robot has still managed to capture the hearts of many fans with its lovable inability to do really anything on its own and its deeply pitched honk that earned it its name. Though not the most commonly seen droid across the galaxy, their consistent presence within the employ of mechanics, junk dealers, and merchants displays that either the walking boxes do have a specified use or that certain individuals have a peculiar taste in robotic pets.
Evidently, High Magistrate Greef Karga may be one such individual, as The Mandalorian season 3, episode 5 "The Pirate" shows that Karga himself is no stranger to the gonk. As he and his people fled their home on Nevarro, one such gonk shuffled side by side with the magistrate as they trekked across the lava flats. Though its presence in Gorian Shard's pirate invasion was understated, the unique appearance of this absolute unit of a gonk serves to shed some light on enigmatic ubiquity of these formidable droids.
