X-Men '97 just worsened two big plot holes from its predecessor, X-Men: The Animated Series. Despite these inconsistencies, many agree that X-Men '97 is a fantastic continuation of the beloved 90s series. X-Men '97 episode 2's ending proved this, with the show's two-part premiere promising several incredibly intriguing storylines going forward. With X-Men '97 season 2 already confirmed, the promising start of the show's inaugural season raises the anticipation for the titular team to continue being a part of the animated MCU going forward.
As X-Men: The Animated Series’ sequel, X-Men '97's Easter eggs draw natural comparisons to the original show. From a rework of the original show's iconic intro to the character title cards that accompany the end credits of each installment, X-Men '97 is heavily leaning into its status as a true sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series as opposed to a soft reboot. While this is majoritively a positive, the sequel finds itself reckoning with some of the inconsistencies of its predecessor, including two specific plot holes that are worsened by the X-Men '97 episodes 1 and 2.
Related What Time X-Men '97 Episodes Release On Disney Plus X-Men '97 episodes will be streaming on Disney Plus throughout the Spring, with release times for each episode having been confirmed by Marvel. X-Men’s First Team Reminds Us Of The Animated Series’ Angel Mistake In X-Men '97 episodes 1 and 2, one of the central themes involves the titular team attempting to continue their work in the absence of Charles Xavier. This burden largely falls on Scott Summers/Cyclops, as he strives to take Professor X's place. Therefore, Cyclops spends a lot of time in Xavier's office, where a portrait of the first X-Men team is hanging. This portrait is a recurring prop in X-Men '97 episodes 1 and 2 and works thematically as a way to further Cyclops' arc, but reminds the audience of a glaring Angel mistake from X-Men: The Animated Series.
If the inconsistencies between Angel's allegiances in X-Men: The Animated Series were not enough, X-Men '97 is highlighting them even more...
In the original show, Angel's debut made it seem as though he was not aware of who the X-Men were. However, it was later revealed that he was part of Xavier's first X-Men team, meaning his initial depiction made no sense. X-Men '97 reiterates the idea that Angel was an original X-Man via Angel's appearance in the aforementioned portrait. If the inconsistencies between Angel's allegiances in X-Men: The Animated Series were not enough, X-Men '97 is highlighting them even more, rather than taking steps to explain a plot hole of the original show.
Rogue’s Mysterious Past Confirms A Brotherhood Of Mutants Plot Hole The second plot hole from X-Men: The Animated Series that X-Men '97 makes somewhat worse surrounds the character of Rogue. X-Men'97's treatment of Rogue and Magneto teases a relationship between the two, adapting a controversial romance from several Marvel Comics stories. Through these hints at a relationship found in X-Men '97 episodes 1 and 2, there are an equal number of references to Rogue's darker, mysterious past as an original member of the Brotherhood of Mutants.
However, another inconsistency in X-Men: The Animated Series is found in the episode titled "The Cure." In this episode, Rogue meets other members of the Brotherhood of Mutants, such as Pyro, yet does not recognize him. The two have seemingly no history, despite both being members of the Brotherhood of Mutants in the past. This could be rectified by explaining that Charles wiped Rogue's memories of her time in the Brotherhood, but X-Men '97's treatment of Rogue and Magneto's relationship implies the former remembers her past.
