The MCU Actually Failed Its Original Avengers Team

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is now preparing for the formation of a new Avengers team for the upcoming crossover events Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, but the MCU terribly failed its original Avengers team. After introducing the members of the original Avengers either in solo movies or as supporting characters in the solo adventures of their future colleagues, the MCU’s Phase One closed with the formation of the original Avengers team in The Avengers, where they went on their first mission together as Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the Chitauri attacked New York City.
The surviving Avengers led the biggest battle the MCU has seen so far in Avengers: Endgame as Thanos and his armies invaded Earth following the Time Heist, which undid Thanos’ snap, and by the end of the movie, the original Avengers team was over, with some of its most beloved members dead and others deciding to retire. The original Avengers team was a key element of the Infinity Saga, and though it seems like they were around for years and did lots of things together, Marvel actually failed the team as they didn’t go on many missions together and the team was fractured way too soon.
The Original Avengers Had Four Missions Together The MCU teased the formation of the Avengers team in the post-credits scene of Iron Man, where Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) arrived at Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) house to talk to him about the Avengers Initiative. After Captain America (Chris Evans) was found frozen more than six decades after his disappearance, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) showed his powers on Earth after being banished to this realm, and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) were recruited, Fury only needed to convince Stark and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to join his team of “remarkable people” so they could stop Loki and the Chitauri invasion. The Battle of New York in The Avengers was the team’s very first mission together, and while their future looked bright and exciting, they only went on three more missions after that.
Avengers: Age of Ultron began with the attack on the HYDRA base in Sokovia, where Baron Strucker was keeping Loki’s scepter (which carried the Mind Stone). The Avengers were sent to retrieve the scepter and came across the Maximoff twins, Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), but the mission was successful. Their next mission was the Battle of Sokovia, when Ultron (voiced by James Spader) decided that he had to eradicate humanity in order to save Earth, and for that, he planned on lifting Sokovia to crash it into the ground to cause global extinction.
That was the last mission of the original Avengers team, as after it, Tony retired from active duty and the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War fractured the team beyond repair, dividing it into Team Iron Man and Team Captain America. Even though they re-teamed in Avengers: Endgame for the Time Heist, Natasha sacrificed herself in Vormir, so the team wasn’t complete during the Battle of Earth, and as the Time Heist had them splitting into smaller teams to get all the Infinity Stones, the audience only got to see the original Avengers team fight together three times.
The MCU Wasted The New Avengers, Too Following Ultron’s defeat and the destruction of Sokovia, Thor returned to Asgard to research the Infinity Stones and Tony retired and became a non-combative member, so Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff assembled a new team. Called “the New Avengers”, Steve and Natasha were seen at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron assembling their new team at the Avengers Compound, formed by Wanda Maximoff, Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany). Unfortunately, the MCU completely wasted the New Avengers and it never showed the team together in action, and the closest there was to it was Captain America, Natasha, Falcon, and Wanda on a mission in Lagos at the beginning of Captain America: Civil War, where they faced Crossbones and his people, and this event was used to create the Sokovia Accords.
Who Will Form The New Avengers Team In Phase 6? Although the MCU is currently without a proper Avengers team, it already has a couple of candidates that can form a new one. The announcement of the Thunderbolts lineup left a couple of characters out of the candidates’ list, such as Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), but there are other characters with a variety of powers and abilities that can form a powerful team.
Now that Sam Wilson is, officially, the new Captain America, he can become the leader of the team, and he can count on the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Black Panther (Letitia Wright), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to form a team right on time to face a massive multiversal war – and hopefully, Marvel won’t repeat its past Avengers mistakes with its new team.
