The Marvels Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Is Way Better Than Expected After Negative Early Reviews

Summary
  • The Marvels is receiving more positive audience feedback than initially suggested, with an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a 62% critical consensus.
  • The movie's poor box office reception and projected earnings lower than The Incredible Hulk indicate a potential failure for Marvel Studios.
  • Factors such as strikes and a delayed release may have affected the movie's performance, but positive audience reactions and word-of-mouth could still help it recover.
Audiences are much happier with The Marvels than early reactions hinted at. The newest movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels features Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau as they each discover their mysterious connection with one another. While it has been suffering from poor box office reception that has it tracking to suffer the worst opening for an MCU movie, it appears to be better than expected on Rotten Tomatoes with audiences.
As evident on the Rotten Tomatoes site, the critical consensus has the movie scoring 62 percent on the Tomatometer, but audience results have been much more positive. At the time of writing, it currently stands at 85 percent with over 500 audience reviews. It is an exceptionally high score after early critical reviews left expectations low. As more viewers witness The Marvels and its shocking ending, the score could still fluctuate.
Could The Marvels Still Recover After The Disappointing Box Office & Early Reactions? The Marvels has been struggling at the domestic box office, having only earned between $47 and $52 million in its opening weekend. Against a budget of over $200 million, it could be a sign that the movie may be a major failure for Marvel Studios. It is currently projected to earn even less in its opening weekend than The Incredible Hulk, which earned $55.4 million. With a pre-existing concern that superhero movies are losing box office dominance, The Marvels is likely proof that the MCU is flagging.
The disappointing reception for The Marvels did not just happen overnight. The MCU has been facing criticism for the dwindling quality of their movies, which was amplified by underwhelming content from Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion. The recent dissatisfaction with Marvel movies likely dissuaded viewers from seeing the latest MCU installment, and the negative-to-mixed reviews further deterred more viewers from watching it in theaters. In addition, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes also meant that the movie could not be properly marketed.
The Marvels was originally slated to release in July before being delayed to its final November 10 opening.
Several factors could still save the movie, however. With both strikes officially over, the actors and writers still have a chance to salvage the film and encourage more moviegoers to check out the latest MCU installment. Furthermore, The Marvels mid-credits scene has initiated conversations about the future, which could pique some interest in seeing the movie. While early reactions were overwhelmingly negative, The Marvels' positive audience reactions could be a sign that it can recover.
