Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 Can Use The Multiverse So Tom Holland’s Doesn’t Have To

Summary
  • Maguire's potential return for Spider-Man 4 sparks excitement for a multiverse story in his next solo film.
  • Maguire has expressed interest in reprising his Spider-Man role, but Sam Raimi is not currently developing Spider-Man 4.
  • Spider-Man 4 could explore a multiverse story with Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, leaving a street-level plot for Tom Holland's next MCU Spider-Man film.
With many rumors surrounding Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 4, the actor's return for a new solo film could include a multiverse story, making it so the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next Spider-Man film with Tom Holland does not have to use it. After one of the most successful trilogies in superhero adaptations, Maguire's Spider-Man 4 was canceled. Years after the shocking decision, the actor came back as his version of Peter Parker opposite Andrew Garfield and Holland's versions of Spider-Man in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home. The 2021 film reignited interest in Maguire's Spider-Man 4.
Maguire sparked rumors about Spider-Man 4 happening last year. Maguire revealed that he wants to return as Spider-Man for more projects, saying, "It would be a yes!" The chances of the movie finally happening now are better than they ever were since it was canceled, as director Sam Raimi has also recently returned to Marvel films, having directed the MCU's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With rumors about the film gaining traction, Raimi revealed he is not currently working on Spider-Man 4. However, a multiverse plot could fit the film and help the MCU at the same time.

Sony And Marvel Are Reportedly Clashing About The Scope Of Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 Following Spider-Man: No Way Home Is A Tough Job Close While there is a chance that Maguire will get to return for another solo Spider-Man film, the MCU has a confirmed Spider-Man 4 starring Tom Holland in the works. After the movie's development was paused due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, Marvel and Sony are hard at work figuring out what story to tell in the upcoming MCU film. However, according to multiple reports, there is seemingly a divide between the two studios on how to proceed. Marvel is said to want a street-level story, while Sony wants another multiverse adventure.
Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending pointed to the direction Marvel Studios reportedly wants to follow for the next movie in Holland's MCU franchise. The movie saw Peter Parker move into a small apartment all by himself, wear a Spider-Man costume that he created with no Stark Tech, and essentially go back to basics as Spider-Man. With Aunt May dead and no one remembering who Peter is, a darker, smaller-scale story would make sense for Spider-Man 4. However, given Spider-Man: No Way Home's success, a multiverse follow-up is tempting, but that is where Maguire's Spider-Man 4 comes in.

A Multiverse Epic Makes Way More Sense For Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 The Director Already Has Multiverse Experience Close While seeing Holland team up with Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men again would be exciting, that reunion could be left for later, likely in the MCU's Avengers: Secret Wars. Holland's Spider-Man 4 being a street-level affair makes more sense than another multiverse event. Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending provided the perfect setup for a smaller story that introduces characters like Black Cat to the MCU. Spider-Man 4 featuring Daredevil and Spidey fighting Kingpin, New York City's new mayor, would be just as epic as another multiverse event but make more sense.
While Holland's Spider-Man 4 goes for a more contained story, Maguire's possible new Spider-Man solo film could use the multiverse. Raimi already has the experience for it, having directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was the MCU movie that has explored the multiverse the most so far. It is unlikely that two live-action Spider-Man franchises would run at the same time, so Maguire's Spider-Man 4 would likely be a one-off major event if it happens. A team-up film with Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men could be just that.

How Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 4 Can Use The Multiverse Spider-Man 4 Could Follow A Tragic No Way Home Decision Close Spider-Man: No Way Home's ending was tragic for Holland's Peter Parker, as Zendaya's MJ, Jacob Batalon's Ned Leeds, and everyone else Peter loved forgot who he was. However, based on how Doctor Strange's spell sent all the characters from other universes away from the MCU by making them forget who Peter Parker is, that seems to imply that Strange's spell impacts Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Man universes. That could be the basis for the two teaming up in Raimi's Spider-Man 4, with the duo searching for a way to undo the spell on their end.
The duo could cross paths with live-action versions of Miles Morales, a Gwen Stacy Spider-Woman played by Emma Stone, and more heroes from the vast Spider-Verse. There are quite a few Marvel Comics events about the Spider-Verse for Maguire's possible Spider-Man 4 to pull from, going from more far-fetched stories like the wasp-like Shathra, a powerful being who wants to control the Great Web, to the more classic Spider-Verse villain Morlun showing up. Whatever path it chooses from, Maguire's Spider-Man 4 would be better suited for the multiverse than Holland's, making for another exciting live-action Spider-Verse event.
Spider-Man 4 Spider-Man 4 is the canceled sequel to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Despite his plans to develop another movie starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the director chose to scrap the project early in development, which allowed Sony to move forward with the Andrew Garfield-led reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. Ideas for the canceled fourth installment included John Malkovich's Vulture, Anne Hathaway's Felicia Hardy, and Bruce Campbell's Mysterio.
