10 Perfect Marvel Villains For Tobey Maguire’s Older Peter Parker In Spider-Man 4

Summary
  • Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 4 may happen due to recent Marvel collaborations.
  • The inclusion of characters like Black Cat and Cadaverous could bring new conflicts and story arcs for Peter Parker.
  • The idea of introducing villains like Regent, Knull, and Kingpin in Spider-Man 4 would enrich the Raimiverse and provide compelling challenges for the iconic hero.
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 4 is more possible now than it has been since when it was first announced, and some villains would be fitting for the Sony/Marvel project if it ever happened. Maguire led some of the best Spider-Man movies of all time, starring in a trilogy under director Sam Raimi. However, his time as Peter Parker was cut short when Spider-Man 4 was canceled.
After several years, Maguire returned as an older version of his Peter Parker in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. With the actor and Raimi, who directed 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, returning to Marvel movies, the timing for Spider-Man 4 to come back is perfect. Raimi has even addressed directing Spider-Man 4, revealing the movie would need a villain that serves as a representation of the obstacle Spider-Man has to face, and some choices are perfect for that.
Related 10 Reasons Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 Should Happen Even After 17 Years There have been rumors that Tobey Maguire will return for Spider-Man 4, and some reasons explain why Sony needs to bring the canceled movie back.
10 Mephisto The Villain Is Part Of A Controversial Spider-Man Story Close Maguire's Spider-Man movies were more grounded than Holland's. However, after the star's short visit to the MCU, which saw Maguire's Peter Parker go through the multiverse and interact with Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange and characters from other universes, Raimi's Spider-Man 4 could be more open to fantastical elements. As such, a villain that could pop up in Spider-Man 4 is Mephisto.
Mephisto was the villain of one of the most criticized Spider-Man comic book stories, "One More Day." The comic arc saw Peter Parker give up his marriage to Mary Jane Watson so that Aunt May, who had been fatally shot, would survive. As Maguire's Peter mentioned in Spider-Man: No Way Home that he and MJ made it work, Mephisto could come for their relationship as he did in the comics, putting Peter's morals and love for MJ in question.
9 Black Cat The Character Could Add Turmoil To Peter Parker's Life Close Black Cat is one of Spider-Man's most popular love interests. Felicia Hardy was part of Raimi's original plans for Spider-Man 4 before the movie was canceled. Recently, Anne Hathaway opened up about her lost Black Cat role, with the actress confirming that she had been cast as Felicia for Spider-Man 4, though Hathaway never got to try on Black Cat's costume for the film.
Raimi said that in a possible Spider-Man 4, the villain would need to be a representation of an obstacle for Peter. While Felicia is unlikely to be the main foe of a Spider-Man movie, Black Cat could fulfill that role Raimi described. Since Peter and MJ are in a good place with their relationship, Hathaway's Black Cat could come in to throw a wrench in that, making Peter question what he really wants in his life.
8 Cadaverous Peter Parker Should Be A Dad Close Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy used some of the hero's most iconic villains. Since then, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies have brought even more iconic foes from the comics to the big screen, including characters who were part of Raimi's original Spider-Man 4 plans, including the Vulture and Mysterio. To thread new ground, Maguire's Spider-Man 4 could use an obscure villain from the comics.
Cadaverous is someone who has incredible potential. The villain hails from J. J. Abrams' Spider-Man limited series and would be perfect for a story about Maguire's older Peter Parker. While the movie would need to differ from the comics, as Maguire's Spider-Man still has all his limbs, for instance, the key story of an older Peter who is a dad having to deal with the resurgence of a terrifying villain from his past is appealing.
7 Mysterio Raimi Could Finally Make Good On A Past Idea Close While many of Raimi's plans for Spider-Man would have to be changed if the movie was made today, there is one that could still work. Recently, Raimi and longtime collaborator Bruce Campbell teamed up yet again for a superhero movie cameo. The actor played Pizza Poppa in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, continuing his Marvel cameo tradition from Raimi's Spider-Man movies.
Campbell appeared as different characters in each of Maguire's three Spider-Man movies. Raimi's plan was to link all of the cameos together for a surprise reveal in Spider-Man 4. The movie would have featured an opening montage with multiple villains. One of those would be Mysterio, played by none other than Campbell. The movie would have revealed that Campbell's characters were always one and the same, just Mysterio in disguise, which could be kept as a cool addition for Spider-Man 4.
6 Vultress Angelina Jolie Is Already Part Of The Marvel Universe Close Raimi planned to cast John Malkovich as the Vulture in Spider-Man 4. However, the director also had an original twist in mind for the character's story. The movie was meant to include Angelina Jolie as the Vulture's daughter. After Adrian Toomes' death, his daughter, described as "an accomplished executive representing a venture capital firm that was trying to buy the Daily Bugle," would take to the skies as the Vultress.
The Vultress was an original character created for the movie, and although the MCU used the idea of Vulture's daughter playing a role in Peter Parker's life, Jolie could play Vultress in Spider-Man 4. The character's Daily Bugle-related arc could remain intact, with the major change being that Vultress is looking for Spider-Man so she can get revenge for her father's death, which could be indirectly related to Spider-Man, as was the case for other Maguire villains.
Angelina Jolie has already joined Marvel by playing Thena in the MCU's Eternals.
5 Regent The Villain Is Perfect For A Story With An Older Peter Close Regent fits with the direction Raimi's Spider-Man 4 could take. As seen by his calm attitude in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the comment about him and MJ being good, Maguire's Spider-Man could be happily married. Regent was a major villain in the "Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows" comic series, which chronicled the adventures of a Peter Parker who was married to Mary Jane Watson and had a daughter, Annie Parker.
Regent is a very powerful villain. He killed all of the Avengers, leaving only Spider-Man alive, as he was not present in the final battle against the villain. Augustus Roman, aka Regent, can replicate the powers of deceased superheroes by taking genetic material from their bodies. Spider-Man could use Regent to expand the Raimiverse while also keeping Spider-Man as its sole hero, with the Avengers' deaths only as a mention and the film focusing on Regent going after Spider-Man after he resurfaces.
4 Knull The Villain Could Give Raimi The Chance To Improve On A Past Failure Close It is no secret that Raimi never planned to include Venom in Spider-Man 3. To appease the studio, Raimi made Topher Grace's Eddie Brock/Venom an important part of the movie. However, as the director did not really want to include the character, Spider-Man 3's Venom ended up not being as exciting as the villain should be.
Raimi could fix that past failure by using Knull as the main villain in Spider-Man 4. The character is a god who was responsible for creating the symbiotes. Knull is a foe with a lot of potential for a live-action adaptation, as it took a lot of effort from many Marvel heroes to stop the villain. If Raimi were to expand the universe of Maguire's Spider-Man, finally debuting its teased Doctor Strange and other heroes, Knull would be perfect for that.
3 Kingpin The Character Is Rumored For Another Spider-Man 4 Close Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin is easily one of the best live-action Marvel villains ever. The character is heavily rumored to be in play for Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 in the MCU, continuing from the Mayor Fisk arc that started at the very end of Echo and will play out in Daredevil: Born Again. However, another version of Kingpin could appear in Maguire's Spider-Man 4.
Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, is one of the villains Spider-Man has fought the most in the comics. There is a wide breadth of stories still to be adapted involving the character and Spider-Man. As part of Sony and Marvel Studios' deal, perhaps a future use of Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men in Avengers: Secret Wars could be tied to a character like Kingpin appearing in Spider-Man 4. Kingpin would be perfect for Raimi's Spider-Man world.
2 Morlun Maguire's Spider-Man 4 Could Continue The Spider-Verse Close Morlun could be used to continue Maguire's Spider-Man return. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the character was taken to another universe thanks to the MCU Doctor Strange's spell, coming into contact with other versions of Peter Parker, past villains, and more. That bout with the multiverse is perfect to serve as the starting point for a full-on live-action Spider-Verse movie.
Instead of having two solo Spider-Man movie franchises running alongside, making Maguire's Spider-Man 4 a movie where he is not dealing with just a personal story but a multiversal threat could help the film's chances of getting made. Morlun would fit that kind of story, with the character being known as a hunter who feeds on the life energy of Spider-Men throughout the Spider-Verse. Maguire's Peter could have the help of Garfield's Spider-Man and others to stop Morlun.
1 Sinister Six Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man Is Strong Enough To Fight Multiple Villains Close Finally, Maguire's Spider-Man 4 could see him go up against a team of villains by himself. The most likely scenario for Raimi to agree on a Spider-Man 4 would be that the film continues the same general direction of his Spider-Man trilogy, which means no multiversal aspects. A way for Sony to still get plenty of exciting characters in the movie is through the Sinister Six.
The studio previously tried getting a Sinister Six movie off the ground to no success, with Sony's Spider-Man Universe seemingly trying to do it again through Morbius and other projects. As a veteran hero, Maguire's Spider-Man has now likely gone up against all of Spider-Man's biggest comic book villains in his universe, having the experience and strength to take on the Sinister Six by himself in what would make Spider-Man 4 a major superhero film event if Sony decides to move forward with it.
Spider-Man 4 Spider-Man 4 is the canceled sequel to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Despite his plans to develop another movie starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the director chose to scrap the project early in development, which allowed Sony to move forward with the Andrew Garfield-led reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. Ideas for the canceled fourth installment included John Malkovich's Vulture, Anne Hathaway's Felicia Hardy, and Bruce Campbell's Mysterio.
