MCU’s X-Men Debut Can Set Up The Perfect Guardians Of The Galaxy Replacement

Summary
  • Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men team could be the perfect replacement for the Avengers following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.
  • The Starjammers could be to the X-Men what the Guardians of the Galaxy are to the Avengers in the MCU.
  • The Starjammers have a strong connection to the X-Men, and could mark the Shi'ar Empire's first live-action appearance ever.
Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot may debut the perfect team to replace the Avengers in the MCU, which means a new cosmic team could also be introduced alongside them to replace the Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn first brought Peter Quill's Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot into live-action in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, and the obscure Marvel Comics team has since become a beloved fixture in the MCU. Since their debut, the Guardians of the Galaxy have grown concurrent to the Avengers, but the futures of these superhero teams are unclear following Avengers: Secret Wars.
Most of the MCU's Infinity Saga was focused on the formation and adventures of the Avengers, with the Guardians of the Galaxy's stories developing alongside, but separate to, the larger superhero team. The Avengers have been absent for the majority of the Multiverse Saga, but the team is expected to reform following Phase 5's Captain America: Brave New World. However, it seems as though the Avengers will soon be replaced as Marvel Studios' primary focus by the MCU's X-Men team, and one powerful cosmic team could be to the X-Men what the Guardians of the Galaxy were to the Avengers.

The Starjammers Can Be To The X-Men What The Guardians Of The Galaxy Were To The Avengers Close The perfect cosmic replacement for the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU's future X-Men projects could be the Starjammers. The Starjammers made their Marvel Comics debut in 1977's X-Men #104, introduced as renegade space-faring adventurers who performed acts of piracy in the tradition of old English buccaneers to fight for freedom from an oppressive extraterrestrial government, while earning money at the same time. This reflects the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy perfectly, as the established MCU team embark on adventures of protection across the cosmos to earn a profit, so the Starjammers would excel at continuing the Guardians' legacy.
The original Starjammers team was led by the human Christopher Summers, a.k.a. Corsair, and included the lizard-like Ch'od, the pheromone-emitting Hepzibah, and the cybernetically-enhanced Raza Longknife. These four unlikely heroes formed the Starjammers during a revolution against the tyrannical government of the Shi'ar Empire that had enslaved them, and eventually crossed paths with the X-Men themselves. Many other characters have been featured in the Starjammers team, including powerful mutants Polaris, Havok, Professor X, Jean Grey and Cyclops, so the roster of the group could change throughout their MCU adventures, just as the line-up of the Guardians of the Galaxy has.
The new roster of Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU's Phase 5 includes Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo the Spacedog, Phyla, Adam Warlock and Blurp.
The Starjammers Have A Fantastic Connection To The X-Men While the Starjammers may already be the perfect replacement for the Guardians of the Galaxy, their close connection to the X-Men team means their debut makes even more sense. The Starjammers' leader, Corsair, is actually the father of X-Men members Scott and Alex Summers, Cyclops and Havok. Christopher Summers began his transformation into Corsair after his airplane was attacked, threatening the lives of his wife and sons. Katherine Summers pushed the children from the airplane, while she and Christopher were teleported to the Shi'ar Empire. There, Christopher was enslaved, while Katherine became the concubine to the twisted Shi'ar Emperor, D'Ken.
Christopher Summers once attempted to assassinate D'Ken, but he was punished by having to witness his wife murdered, and their unborn child, Gabriel, cut from her womb. He was subsequently sent to a mining camp where he would meet his future Starjammers teammates and begin to plan his revolution. After becoming the Starjammers, the team met the X-Men, including Cyclops, and helped overthrow D'Ken's government, replacing him with Lilandra. Scott Summers is sure to be reinvented for the MCU following years of Cyclops being neglected in Fox's X-Men franchise, so it would be great to see his father debut, too.
Related 10 X-Men Characters Who Would Never Work In The MCU Even though the integration of mutants and the X-Men into the MCU is exciting, there are several mutants from Marvel Comics that should be ignored.
MCU’s Starjammers’ Debut Can Introduce The Shi’ar To Live-Action For The First Time Ever The Shi'ar is a hugely important alien race associated with the X-Men in Marvel Comics, most notably as Professor X forms a close romantic bond with the Empire's new ruler, Lilandra. Despite their importance, the Shi'ar have never been adapted into live-action, but the introduction of the Starjammers in the MCU's future could change this. The Shi'ar have a pivotal role in X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men '97, particularly through the debut of the Imperial Guard, the Shi'ar's superpowered enforcers. These characters deserve live-action adaptations, so the Starjammers' introduction in Marvel Studios' X-Men may be more important than realized.
The Shi'ar were originally expected to be featured in 2019's Dark Phoenix, but they were replaced by the D'Bari, led by Jessica Chastain's Vuk.
