X-Men "97 Sets Up A Brutal Wolverine Moment Too R-Rated For The MCU

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for X-Men '97, episode 8
Summary
  • X-Men '97 might adapt one of Wolverine's worst moments from the comics in its season finale.
  • Magneto's EMP attack sets the stage for a Fatal Attractions adaptation, which could be bad news for Wolverine.
  • Wolverine violently losing his adamantium in X-Men '97 thanks to Magneto would likely be more brutal than anything the X-Men movies have shown.
X-Men' 97 may set up one of the most brutal Wolverine moments for its season finale. Thus far, the iconic X-Man and former Weapon X has largely been sidelined in the animated series and has, refreshingly, received less of a spotlight compared to his fellow mutant heroes. However, X-Men '97 may end up adapting one of Logan's worst moments from the original comics during its three-part finale.
As seen in X-Men '97 episode 8, the first chapter of the show's three-part finale ended with the dynamic returns of both Magneto and Charles Xavier, both of whom were presumed to be dead, Xavier following the end of the original series and Magneto following the Fall of Genosha as seen in X-Men '97 episode 5. To that end, it looks as though the stage is being set for X-Men '97 to adapt the Fatal Attractions storyline from the comics, an event that could have brutal consequences for Wolverine by the end of the series.

X-Men '97 Is Setting Up Magneto's Fatal Attractions Storyline War With Humanity Begins Close As seen in X-Men '97, Magneto is freed by Valerie Cooper from his captivity at the hands of Bastion and Mister Sinister. Having orchestrated the Fall of Genosha and Magneto's imprisonment, Baston and Sinister have established Operation Zero Tolerance, a joint program comprised of multiple world leaders and supporters seeking to end mutantkind once and for all. This includes using advanced cybernetics to turn average humans into brutal mutant-killing Prime Sentinels, ready to be activated at Basion's whim.
As a result, Magneto heads straight to the magnetic North Pole once he escapes Bastion's facility. Having had "enough" of humanity's violent intolerance and persecution, the Master of Magnetism uses his amplified powers at the North Pole to unleash a global EMP, disrupting countless electoral systems across the planet. This includes the legions of Prime Sentinels Bastion has activated and were threatening to kill the rest of the X-Men. As such, this mirrors Marvel Comics' Fatal Attractions storyline published in 1993 where Magneto also unleashes a massive EMP following a presumed death.
Fatal Attractions Is Bad News For Wolverine Logan Could Brutally Lose His Adamantium Considering Magneto's clear Fatal Attractions nod in X-Men '97, the show's three-part finale may adapt other elements as well. This could involve the comic event's fallout with Xavier wiping Magneto's mind which results in the creation of Onslaught, a major X-Men villain born from the dark psyches of both Magneto and Xavier. However, X-Men '97 continuing to mirror Fatal Attractions could be terrible for Wolverine in particular.
In Fatal Attractions, Wolverine manages to get the drop on Magneto, resulting in the Master of Magnetism receiving some pretty significant injuries thanks to Logan's adamantium claws. In a rage, Magneto uses his powers to savagely tear the metal adamantium from Wolverine's bones on a molecular level. The metal exits Logan's body through his open wounds, leaving him near death after the metal literally bursts out and erupts across his entire body. As a result, this could very well happen in X-Men '97 as well now that Magneto has seemingly declared war on humans and Xavier has returned to Earth.

Wolverine Losing His Adamantium Would Be Worse Than Any X-Men Movie Has Done Very Unlikely For The MCU It's not hard to see Wolverine becoming a major casualty and losing his adamantium in the final two episodes of X-Men '97. Assuming Xavier summons the X-Men to stop Magneto from killing all humans, Wolverine could very well be positioned to face Magneto as a foe, despite the Master of Magnetism having been the X-Men's leader in Xavier's absence for the majority of the season. That said, Logan losing the metal covering his claws and bones as he does in the comics would undoubtedly be just as violently disturbing as it was in the original comics.
On-screen, Logan has been in some pretty brutal situations across Fox's various X-Men movies. Wolverine's been stabbed, shot, impaled, and even burned to a crisp thanks to the nuclear bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki during WWII. Magneto even wove pieces of rebar into Logan's pre-adamantium body in 2014's Days of the Future Past, seemingly a savage reverse of Fatal Attractions. However, the actual act of Wolverine's adamantium being ripped and torn from his body so violently would be truly horrifying, likely reserved only for Rated-R features if it were to ever be depicted within the live-action MCU.
