10 Potential Members Of The MCU’s New Defenders Team

Summary
  • After integrating the Defenders Saga into the MCU's official timeline, Marvel Studios could form a new team of Defenders in the MCU.
  • Marvel Television's Defenders, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, could rejoin the MCU.
  • Other potential Defenders members include Doctor Strange, War Machine, the Hulk and Echo, among others.
Marvel Studios could form a new Defenders team in the MCU, bringing together several street-level superheroes to revive the team after its debut in Marvel Television's Defenders Saga. Comprising Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher, Marvel Television's Defenders Saga released on Netflix between 2015 and 2019, and focused on darker and grittier storylines, putting some of Marvel's most human street-level superheroes in the spotlight. The Defenders saw Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist come together to battle the Hand, but the series didn't tap into the team's full potential in the MCU.
Following the Defenders Saga's cancelation, its canon status in the wider world of the MCU was disputed, and this still hasn't been officially confirmed or denied by Marvel Studios. However, in conjunction with the 2024 release of Marvel Spotlight series Echo, the Defenders Saga was integrated into the MCU's official timeline on Disney+, suggesting the events of these shows may actually be canon. This means that a new team of Defenders could be brought together to protect the streets of New York City, potentially featuring past members, as well as new recruits who could add more strength to the team.

Related 10 Things The Defenders Shows Add To The MCU Timeline If They're Official Canon Marvel Studios may have just made the Defenders Saga canon to the MCU, which finally brings several great stories and characters into the MCU proper. 10 Daredevil Could Form The Defenders Again In The MCU’s Phase 5 Charlie Cox Debuted As Matt Murdock's Daredevil In Daredevil (2015) Close Charlie Cox was the first actor to make the move from the Defenders Saga to the MCU, with appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo leading into his own MCU series, Daredevil: Born Again. Daredevil is a fan-favorite street-level hero, so he is the perfect candidate to recruit a new Defenders team, particularly after his experiences with the Defenders on Netflix. Murdock was initially hesitant to join the team, but since Daredevil is expected to be at the core of the MCU's upcoming street-level stories, he is a clear candidate for a new Defenders team.
Several other Daredevil cast members have been confirmed to be returning in Daredevil: Born Again, including Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and Wilson Bethel.
9 Jessica Jones Has Been Rumored To Return To The MCU Krysten Ritter Debuted As Jessica Jones In Jessica Jones (2015) While Krysten Ritter hasn't yet been confirmed to be returning as Jessica Jones, her existence in the MCU has been teased. Jessica Jones may have been a contact on Jennifer Walters' phone in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and recent images of Ritter and Luke Cage star Mike Colter spurred speculation that they could be reprising their Defenders Saga roles in the MCU. Bringing together a new team of Defenders would be the perfect place for this to happen, as Jessica Jones was a founding member of the team on Netflix, and fills the necessary role of the team's grounding presence.
Related Did She-Hulk Secretly Tease Another Marvel Hero's Phase 4 Return? She-Hulk: Attorney at Law hinted at many unseen Marvel heroes existing in the MCU, with a small tease pointing to the return of another Netflix hero. 8 Luke Cage Could Have A Bright Future In The MCU Mike Colter Debuted As Luke Cage In Jessica Jones (2015) Mike Colter's Luke Cage ended his Defenders Saga journey in a curious place, as Luke Cage season 2's finale left his future as a hero or criminal ambiguous. However, as a prominent member and leader of the Avengers in Marvel Comics, it would be great to see Luke Cage return to the MCU, and joining a new Defenders team could be the perfect stepping stone to a much bigger MCU role. In a January 2023 interview with Screen Rant, Mike Colter suggested that he'd be open to returning as Luke Cage, as there are plenty more stories to be told.
I'm sure there's tons [more to do]. I mean, we didn't beat a dead horse there. We had more to do. But that's Marvel's character. I look at it as I had a good chance to play that role, and then it's their character. They can do whatever they want with it, and good luck. If they call me, we'll talk. I'm happy for Charlie to go back and do Daredevil again because I know he really loves that character. But I had a good run. I was really appreciative of the opportunity, but I'd like to focus and just try other things. I never looked back, but Luke Cage is a great opportunity.
7 Iron Fist Has Been Speculated To Appear In Shang-Chi 2 Finn Jones Debuted As Danny Rand's Iron Fist In Iron Fist (2017) Finn Jones' iteration of Danny Rand, a.k.a. the Iron Fist, received some criticism in the Defenders Saga, suggesting he may not be the one to assume this mystical role in the MCU's future. Nevertheless, recent rumors have suggested that a different Iron Fist could appear, perhaps in Destin Daniel Cretton's upcoming Shang-Chi 2. Danny Rand is special as he bridges the gap between Marvel's mystical and street-level stories, so it would be brilliant to see him return to become a member of a new Defenders team, though it's possible a different Iron Fist, perhaps Colleen Wing, could assume this role.

While Marvel Television's Defenders team dealt with a grounded threat, Marvel Comics' team took on supernatural foes, with the first iteration, comprising Doctor Strange, Namor and the Hulk, battling Lovecraftian beings known as the Undying Ones. Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner operates in New York in the MCU, so it would make sense for him to want to protect his city just like Marvel Television's Defenders, meaning he could add some star-power to the team.
5 Echo’s Daredevil Connection Makes Her Perfect For The Defenders Alaqua Cox Debuted As Maya Lopez's Echo In Hawkeye (2021) Maya Lopez's Echo is one of the MCU's newest street-level heroes, as Phase 5's Echo series marked her transformation from minor antagonist into a bona fide superhero. Alaqua Cox debuted in Hawkeye as the surrogate daughter of Wilson Fisk's Kingpin, giving her an immediate connection to several street-level heroes. Now she has superpowers of her own, Echo would be a formidable asset to the Defenders, and working with the team could give her the opportunity to seek redemption for her past villainy. This could also provide the chance for Echo and Daredevil's Marvel Comics romance to be explored in live-action.
4 War Machine Could Be The Defenders’ Version Of Iron Man Terrence Howard Debuted As James "Rhodey" Rhodes In Iron Man (2008) & Don Cheadle Replaced Him In Iron Man 2 (2010) Where Tony Stark's Iron Man was a major asset to the original Avengers team, James "Rhodey" Rhodes' War Machine could fill this role for the MCU's Defenders. War Machine's future is unclear following 2023's Secret Invasion, which saw Rhodey revealed to have been replaced by a Skrull for an undetermined amount of time, so he may be hoping to reconnect with his superhero friends and striving to do some good. As a member of the short-lived Secret Defenders in Marvel Comics, there is precedence for War Machine to join the team, but Marvel Studios' upcoming Armor Wars may change that.

These are the 4 most popular theories. 3 Hawkeye Can Join The Defenders After Passing His Mantle To Kate Bishop Jeremy Renner Debuted As Clint Barton's Hawkeye In Thor (2011) While Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop has been passed the Hawkeye mantle, and is set to become a fixture of the MCU's upcoming Young Avengers team, Jeremy Renner's future in the MCU as Clint Barton is less clear. It's possible Barton could rejoin the Avengers in Phase 6, but 2021's Hawkeye saw him excel as a street-level hero, meaning he'd make a strong addition to the new Defenders team. Hawkeye was one of Marvel Comics' Defenders' earliest recruits, so it would be great to see him join the new MCU team, bringing some of his Avengers expertise to the smaller-scale role.
2 Spider-Man Could Join A New Team After No Way Home Tom Holland Debuted As Peter Parker's Spider-Man In Captain America: Civil War (2016) Similarly to War Machine, Peter Parker's Spider-Man was only featured in the short-lived Secret Defenders team in Marvel Comics, but there are clear reasons why Tom Holland's wall-crawler would be a perfect match for the MCU's new Defenders team. After the heartbreaking events of 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker is alone in the world, but has been teased to become a much more street-level-focused hero. This could prime him to come into contact with heroes such as Daredevil, who may recruit the former Avenger into a new superhero team, where his identity perhaps doesn't need to be revealed.
1 Doctor Strange Is A Long-Running Leader Of The Defenders In Marvel Comics Benedict Cumberbatch Debuted As Doctor Stephen Strange In Doctor Strange (2016) Close Doctor Strange is the most prominent member of Marvel Comics' Defenders, having formed the team back in 1971, and being featured as the team's leader across various iterations. This means that Benedict Cumberbatch's live-action Master of the Mystic Arts is the perfect candidate to lead the Defenders team in the MCU proper. Since he isn't considered an Avenger, and currently isn't a part of any superhero team (though has joined Clea to stop an incursion), Doctor Strange would be a brilliant match for the street-level Defenders, though his inclusion would perhaps lead to the team taking on more mystical threats.
