Summary
  • Madame Web takes place in 2003, which is reflected in a soundtrack that features hits from the 90s and early 2000s.
  • Madame Web's soundtrack includes songs like "Toxic" by Britney Spears and "Dreams" by The Cranberries.

Sony's Madame Web takes place a couple of decades before the Marvel franchise's present day, which is reflected in its soundtrack. Released on February 14, 2024, Madame Web opened Marvel's 2024 movie schedule with an origin story. Dakota Johnson's Cassandra Webb a.k.a. Madame Web looks quite different from her original comic book counterpart, who was initially depicted in the comics as an older woman who wears a blindfold and sits on a spider-shaped chair. In-universe, the reason for this change is that Johnson's Cassie is only beginning her superhero journey, with the events of Madame Web taking place in 2003.
Madame Web's 2003 setting is reflected in Cassie and Ben Parker's age. Throughout the movie, Ben is nervous about Mary Parker's pregnancy, which soon results in Peter Parker's birth. If Madame Web's Peter Parker follows a similar journey to most Peter Parker variants seen in all twelve previous Spider-Man movies, then he will likely have become Spider-Man before 2024. Another aspect Madame Web's 2003 setting is reflected in, of course, is in the movie's soundtrack, which includes hits from the 1990s and the early 2000s.
Related Madame Web Ending Explained (In Detail) The Madame Web movie ending is key for Sony's Spider-Man Universe, setting up the titular Marvel hero and three versions of Spider-Woman. Every Song In Madame Web Close Madame Web doesn't feature as many songs as other Marvel movies, but its diegetic music contextualizes the events of the story. In fact, one of the early-aughts songs that Cassandra Webb and her young allies listen to at one point becomes key to their escape from Tahar Rahim's evil Spider-Man equivalent Ezekiel Sims, and the characters point out that it's a recent hit. Other songs in Madame Web are a little older, but they still work within the movie's setting. On the flip side, a couple of songs featured in the movie are newer versions of the original releases.

Related Everything We Know About Madame Web 2 Madame Web clearly sets up a sequel set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe through its four main heroes. However, a future installment faces some problems. Exactly When Every Song Plays In Madame Web Close
  • "Miles Away" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2003) is the first song featured in Madame Web. It plays during Cassie Webb's introduction, which takes place after her mother's death scene in the movie's opening sequence. Cassie travels by ambulance to attend an emergency alongside Ben Parker, which eventually leads her to fall into a river and awaken her precognition powers.
  • "La Púrpura de la Rosa: 3. ¿Tú Eres Venus?" by Graciela Oddone (2017) is performed at the play Ezekiel Sims attends, where he seduces an NSA agent. Sims spends the night with the agent, but the visions of his death at the hands of Madame Web's three Spider-Women wake him up. After explaining his nightmares to the agent, he tells her about his intentions to kill them, poisons her, and steals her access to the NSA's state-of-the-art surveillance system, which allows him to track Cassie Webb, Julia Carpenter, Anya Corazón, and Mattie Franklin.
  • "Scandalous (StarGate Radio Mix)" by Mis-Teeq (2018) plays after the three future Spider-Women leave the woods to eat at a nearby diner. Despite Cassie's insistence in keeping a low profile after their incident at the subway station, Mattie Franklin convinces her two new friends to have something to eat while Cassie is away. This proves to be a dangerous decision, as it places her right in Ezekiel Sims' crosshairs.
  • "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks (1997) plays while the three young women eat at the diner. At this point, Ezekiel Sims is heading towards the diner to kill them. Meanwhile, Cassie is still investigating her pursuer's identity, and she hasn't yet had the vision that allows her to intervene.
  • "Toxic" by Britney Spears (2003) plays at the diner, prompting Julia, Anya, and Mattie to dance on top of a table. Cassie hears the song playing on the taxi cab's radio, which elicits a vision of the girls' death at the diner. "Toxic" then serves as a timer for Cassie, who guides herself by the song to know how long it will take for Ezekiel Sims to arrive. Fortunately for her protegés, Cassie arrives in the nick of time.
  • "I Think We're Alone Now" (1987) plays when Cassie wakes up the girls at the motel they're staying at while they escape Ezekiel Sims. Cassie explains the villain's motives to them and reveals that he's linked to her mother. She also teaches them how to perform CPR, which eventually allows them to save Cassie's life in Madame Web's final fight after Cassie drowns for the second time.
  • "Dreams" by The Cranberries (1993) plays during the credits. The lyrics "and oh, my dreams It's never quite as it seems" and "then I open up and see the person falling here is me" accurately describe Cassie Webb's abilities and origin story in the movie. Madame Web's lack of post-credits scenes breaks a Marvel tradition, but the film's ending leaves the idea of a Madame Web sequel well laid out, with all four heroes set to adopt their superhero identities and the responsibility that comes with them.
Where To Listen To The Madame Web Soundtrack Madame Web's full soundtrack may soon be found on the Madison Gate Records website. However, Madame Web's original score, composed in its entirety by Johan Söderqvist, is available right away from the movie's release date. It includes all extradiegetic music composed specifically for the film, meaning that it excludes the songs released by artists like Britney Spears and The Cranberries. Madame Web's original score can be found on Amazon Music, as well as Spotify:
