Mark Hamill has cast some significant doubt regarding his Star Wars future as Luke Skywalker, especially when it comes to the upcoming Mandalorian movie. Although Lucasfilm's projects set during the New Republic-era look to be taking inspiration from Heir to the Empire and Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, a reworked adaptation for the established canon may not feature the heroes of the original trilogy in exactly the same way. As such, Hamill seems to share this sentiment.
The second and third seasons of The Mandalorian have teased the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the Empire's greatest tacticians who disappeared into the Unknown Regions just before the original trilogy of Star Wars films. In the non-canon Legends, Thrawn came back after Return of the Jedi to lead the Imperial Remnant in Zahn's Heir to the Empire novel, the first of a trilogy. The books also featured Leia Organa, Han Solo, Lando, and especially Luke in key roles as they sought to defend the New Republic from Thrawn's Dark Force fleet. However, Hamill isn't interested in returning as Luke Skywalker again for a canonical version.
