It's a great time to be a fan of Star Wars video game adaptations, but one of the best titles in the franchise will probably never again see the light of day. Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world game balancing planetary exploration with large-scale space battles, was recently revealed with a 2024 release date. The Star Wars Jedi duology has met with critical acclaim, with the second game, Survivor, being praised for its expansive maps, punishing combat, and engaging characters. The delayed remake of Knights of the Old Republic, the brand-new narrative-driven Star Wars: Eclipse, and the team battleground shooter Star Wars: Hunters are all underway.
However, for every new Star Wars game recently released or in development, there's another that's all but lost to time. The canon of Star Wars video games isn't without its flops (the sluggish PS1 fighter Masters of Teräs Käsi and baffling minigame collection Kinect Star Wars come to mind) but there are also a number of classics that don't deserve to be forgotten. The chaotic engagements of the original Battlefront 2, Kyle Katarn's debut in Dark Forces, the whimsical joy of the first two LEGO Star Wars adaptations - all have their successors in the modern Star Wars canon. One of the best Star Wars games, however, is still sitting on the shelf, and will probably remain there for the foreseeable future.
Shadows Of The Empire Contradicts Star Wars Canon Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire will likely never see a remake because it no longer fits in the Disney Star Wars canon timeline. The classic Nintendo 64 third-person shooter is a part of the Star Wars Legends canon, formerly known as the Expanded Universe. A catch-all term for a variety of Star Wars spin-offs, including novels, comics, games, and TV series - everything besides the original trilogy and prequel films. In 2014, however, two years after Disney acquired the entirety of Lucasfilm, the company announced that the entire Expanded Universe - including Shadows of the Empire - was no longer canon. All the Star Wars video game adaptations that have been released since this announcement are part of the new canon, including the upcoming Outlaws.
